Dr. Calynn Lawrence spearheads powerful no-cost mental health event alongside fellow change makers

In an inspiring display of community benevolence, mental health champion Dr. Calynn Lawrence and The Holistic Healing Source for Marginalized Society recently hosted The 2026 Free Community Mental Health Breakfast. Recognizing that financial constraints often prevent vulnerable individuals from seeking the psychosocial support they need, they ensured that attendees from all backgrounds could participate with minimal barriers. By producing this transformative event entirely free of charge, the organization underscored its unwavering commitment to making holistic wellness an accessible right for everyone, particularly within oppressed and marginalized populations.

Insights on Whole-Person Recovery and Self-Love

The event was anchored by profound keynotes from Dr. Lawrence and her mother, Dawn Smith, M.Psych.

  • Whole-Person Recovery: Dr. Lawrence, a multi-board-certified trauma specialist, presented on the vital concept of “Whole-Person Recovery”, emphasizing that true healing requires addressing the mind, body, and spirit in unison. She powerfully detailed how systemic oppression operates as an “ambient trauma”, meaning that for marginalized individuals, engaging in intentional, holistic recovery is a universal necessity.
  • The Assignment of Self-Love: Dawn Smith, M.Psych, board-certified holistic mental health specialist, delivered a deeply moving presentation on self-love, framing it as a lifelong emotional assignment to prioritize one’s physical, mental, and emotional needs. She expertly dismantled the misconception that prioritizing oneself is selfish, reminding the audience that “self love is not vanity it is sanity”. Smith also guided attendees through common barriers to achieving self-worth, such as unresolved past trauma, the fear of breaking family or cultural molds, and the exhausting cycle of being a “people pleaser”.

A Dynamic and Emotionally Charged Panel

Complementing the foundational keynotes was an incredible roster of panelists who brought varying expertise, professional acclaim, and lived experiences to the stage. This diverse coalition of change-makers offered invaluable, multi-faceted perspectives on wellness and advocacy. They bravely tackled sensitive yet critical topics, including domestic violence, human trafficking, suicide, substance abuse, veteran care, parenting, and community trauma.

The panelists:

  • Jasmin Ford, APRN, MSN, PMHNP-BC: Award-Winning Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Educator, and Entrepreneur.
  • Dr. Robina Wright-Alexander: Licensed Professional Counselor, Doctor of Education, M.A, M.Div.
  • A’Shonti McKinney: CEO of Crowned Elites, LLC.

  • Rob Mayfield: Professional Comedian and Media Personality.
  • Delois Dean: Professional Comedian and Media Personality.

The atmosphere was highly engaging, dynamic, and deeply emotionally charged. The raw vulnerability and authentic storytelling of the speakers brought attendees to tears during poignant segments, while the sharp wit and relatable humor had the room erupting in loud, emphatic laughter moments later.

Supporting a Life-Saving Cause

Beyond its educational and emotional resonance, the breakfast was a resounding philanthropic success. Dr. Lawrence, her team, and the guest speakers are to be commended for seamlessly executing a highly impactful event that not only educated and nourished the community but also raised several hundred dollars for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Illinois.

These vital funds will directly support a phenomenal cause, aiding NAMI Illinois in continuing to provide its plethora of completely free, confidential in-person and virtual support groups, telephonic counseling, and educational programming. Given that the organization served over 90,000 people of all ages and demographics just last year, the money raised will help ensure that these life-saving mental health services remain a beacon of hope for those in distress. Hats off to those who contributed to such a touching event!
