Many people leave appointments saying, “I forgot to mention half my problems.” A little preparation can make your doctor visit smoother and more useful.
Before you go, jot down your main concerns. When did the symptom start? How often does it happen? What makes it better or worse? For example, “headache for 3 weeks, worse in the evening, improves with rest” is clearer than “my head hurts.”
List your current medicines, including over-the-counter pills, supplements, and home remedies. Doctors need to know everything you’re taking to avoid dangerous combinations. Bringing old reports and scans in an organised way also helps avoid repetition and confusion.
During the visit, start with the most important issue instead of saving it for the end. Be honest about lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol, or stress; doctors are not there to judge you.
If you don’t understand something, ask: “Can you explain that in simpler words?” or “What are the next steps?” A small notebook or notes app can help you remember instructions once you’ve left the clinic.
Good communication is a two-way street, and a little planning goes a long way.
